Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cell therapy for hair loss is an investigational therapy. Active research is going on in this field and holds a huge promise for the future.
Stem cells are the non-specialized cells which are capable of dividing into similar type of stem cells such as blood, skin, nerve, blood vessels etc. stem cells can be fetal (obtained from embryo) or adult (obtained from bone marrow, blood, fat cells or hair follicles). In the field of hair restoration, stem cell research is being carried from stem cells from hair bulb and shaft and from fat cells.
The Replicel technique was pioneered by company co founded by Rolf Hoffmann and Kevin McElwee. After harvesting the hair follicle from the back of scalp, the dermal sheath cup cells from the base of the follicle is isolated and are multiplied in lab. its then injected into skin to look for hair growth. its still in the early stages of clinical trials.
Stem cell derived from fat cells is another abundant source of stem cell. lot of active research is going on to use Adipose derived stem cell for hair growth and hair differentiation.
